Rogue Traders – Who are they?
I’m sure an image comes to mind when you hear those words – Rogue Traders!
Whether it is someone who says all the right things, takes money but never does the work. One who quotes for work way beyond the going rate. Then there’s the ‘builder’ who says all the right things, sounds competent but in reality leaves the house in a worse state than when they got there. Worse still is the trader than convinces you that something is wrong with your property. Yet truth be told there is nothing wrong. The BBC Rogue Traders programme, aired from 2001 – the present, has certainly made us more aware of these problems.
What to Look Out For
Doorstep Scammers – These ones use a range of tactics particularly targeting the vulnerable including looking for tired house exteriors which may indicate elderly residents. Sadly such con-artists have managed to extort money upfront from susceptible individuals and never return to do the work.
Dishonest and Negligent – The Cowboys, oh the stories that make your jaw drop and your eyes roll. Sometimes its the company that puts in the cheapest tender that gets the job. Then you find they take short cuts, don’t buy quality goods and leave the householder with problems for years to come. Although this is not always the case it is worth while doing your research before committing your funds. Cheapest is not always best but equally the most expensive doesn’t mean a good job either.
What To Look For
As the home owner its good to take some responsibility for who you choose. How do you do that? Don’t choose a trader blindly, in other words find out more about them. For example, where was their last job, what reputation have they built, what kind of reviews have they had. What trade memberships do they have? What is their aftercare service like? Don’t be afraid to ask questions before you commit.
When you decide to go ahead, make sure you are both on the same page. You can do this by double checking they know what you require. Make sure you understand what you have ordered and what they are supplying. Have it all in writing and keep all the paperwork.
