Last week we learnt that condensation is a part of life, so what we need to know is how to prevent it becoming a problem.
What are some of the issues?
We are all familiar with steamed up windows and mirrors. Water droplets on our windows when we open the curtains in the morning, especially with single glazing. Over time black mould can develop around the windows also on walls, requiring elbow grease and redecoration. Curtains and behind wardrobes often suffer. Other issues may not be so obvious, someone has had a bath but the bedroom seems to have damp. What can we do to improve the our homes?
The Simple Steps
- Stop water vapour creeping through the house especially during cooking or taking a bath. How? After a bath open the window and close the door. While cooking close the doors to the rest of the house and keep a window open, possibly install an extractor fan.
- Position radiators under the windows, allowing the warmth of the room to reach them. Check how close the curtains are to the windows, allow room for air to circulate.
- Open windows to permit an air change this can be a few minutes or longer for a complete air change, especially in the bedroom.
Ventilation is Key
Fascinating Fact – Modern buildings are designed to be draught proof, lacking the natural ventilation of Granny’s cottage. They often have cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and with draught proofing throughout they can become water vapour traps. To avoid problems keep the house well heated and aired. In cold weather keep some heating on all of the time. Remember water vapour does not remain in the room where it was generated, it will travel through the house so keep the above steps in mind to protect your home.
Inevitably with single glazing there is more chance of condensation due to the fact that the outside temperature is often cooler than the inside. With double glazing or triple there is a barrier which allows the outside glass to be cold and the inner glass to maintain a higher temperature (if the windows are not prevented from being heated that is).
