Orangery – uPVC Windows, Doors & Fascias – Case Study

uPVC wood effect triple glazed windows

It is so exciting to share this latest case study with you. Let’s look at the elements that make up this project. A Sky Lantern with Active Blue glass set in an EPDM flat roof. Triple glazed windows and doors matched to the existing uPVC Golden Oak wood effect windows. Plus matching fascia’s around the four dormer windows.

We will consider its purpose, the design process itself, the actual installation and the finished results.

Set near Lea Bailey in an Herefordshire valley where the sun seems to shine on the house all day. The owners Mr & Mrs Mower bought this home 3 years ago and have made it their own by beautifully landscaping the garden. What better way could there be then to invite the garden into the home with a beautiful Orangery.

Designing an Ultraframe Orangery with Ultrasky Lantern

So what were their reasons for choosing the Orangery?

We chose it as a Garden Room to be able to appreciate our garden and outlook 365 days a year. It also gives us an additional reception room to extend our lounge when entertaining. Plus we wanted the design to be a more permanent fixture to the house than a conservatory.

Excellent reasons to extend the living space, let’s explore the process they went through with Perfect Choice.

Marie was the designer, we showed her the outside space and flagged what we wanted the Orangery to achieve, she then used a CAD programme to illustrate what this might look like, superimposed on a photo of the back of the house.

This is the way it was…

Making the Choice

They spent 24 hours considering the design, originally they chose a black contemporary finish but asked for it to be shown in the Golden oak. So Marie came back with the revised image plus revised quotation including the dormer renovations. Everyone agreed it was a better finish for the house. Its a good time to mention why Perfect Choice was chosen for the work…

We were impressed with quotation process for the Orangery and for the re-cladding of the Dormers against other competitors. A big plus was the ability of Perfect Choice to undertake the:-

1. Design and build

2. Additional roof works (replacing flashing and roof felt as required).

3. Plumbing works in relocating drains and taps.

4. Good quality plastering/rendering

5. The ability to have an electrician to undertake the necessary works.

All without us having to sub-contract these trades.

The Orangery Installation Progresses

Once Mr & Mrs Mower had chosen their design and agreed to the quotation, it all begins. Firstly Stuart went out to survey the site, measured up and confirmed final details. He also advised on the ground works necessary i.e. moving the drains, relocating the drainpipes plus moving the outside tap. Let’s take a look at some of the photos…

You will see from the pictures that its constructed from a framework that makes up the walls and floor. It is fully insulated then plaster-boarded inside and rendered on the outside. This gives it the impression of being an extension of the house. As well as the obvious work involved – the pipes and drains having to be relocated meant the patterned brickwork and patio slabs also had to be re-laid. Mr Mower mentioned how well the cutting in of the new roofing lead had been done too.

Its fair to say that all these things need to be remembered when getting a quote, the extent of the work involved. Always make sure you know what is included and that the company you choose has the skills needed, not all quotes are equal. Perfect Choice does go that extra mile.

The Contemporary and Traditional Orangery Blend

Let’s take a look at the completed project… Here we see how seamlessly the new Orangery blends with the house, as if it had always been there. The modern Roof Lantern set off by the more traditional Golden Oak wood effect windows, doors and Dormer fascias. I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a Perfect combination.
